Narrow Win for a New Leader
Dr. Sujan Kadariya has won the position of Chairperson of the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU) by just seven votes. He secured 732 votes, narrowly defeating his closest rival, Prakash Paudel, during the 24th National Conference of ANNFSU.
What Is ANNFSU?
ANNFSU stands for All Nepal National Free Students Union. It is the student wing of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), or CPN (UML). The organization actively mobilizes students across Nepal and plays a strong role in shaping education policy, especially in universities and colleges.
New Faces in Key Positions
Anjana Siwakoti and Bikash Shrestha have been elected as Vice-Chairs. Deepak Dhami is the new General Secretary.
Leaders within the CPN-UML had aimed to boost their appeal among youth by bringing in a young medical professional. Following this vision, they nominated Dr. Kadariya for the top post, even though he had less political experience than his competitors.
Mixed Results for Doctors and Engineers
Five doctors contested in this election. Dr. Anand Kumar Singh ran for Secretary but did not win. Dr. Pushparaj Bham secured a seat as an open secretariat member, while Dr. Prabin Bhusal joined the central committee through the University National Committee. However, Dr. Sanraj Tharu failed to win the Vice-Chair post for the Accounts Commission.
Compared to doctors, more engineers contested the election, and many of them gained positions. Several lawyers also won roles as secretariat members.

After his victory, Dr. Kadariya said, “Under my leadership, the student movement will enter a new phase of experimentation.”
Meanwhile, Prakash Paudel, who narrowly lost, posted a gracious message on social media. He thanked his supporters and promised to continue his journey. His message read:
