Nepali Congress lawmaker Jiwan Jung Basnet delivered a fiery speech at the National Assembly, slamming what he called a “toxic narrative” pushed by some Nepalis living abroad. He claimed that these individuals—some with “three wives or four husbands”—blame people living in Nepal for the country’s problems while ignoring their own moral failures.

“This nation wasn’t ruined by us,” Basnet told the chamber. “Older generations caused the damage. Yes, some here are responsible too. But now, people abroad say Nepal is hopeless because of corruption. They act like the country can’t be fixed.”

Basnet accused these critics of spreading defeatist messages and ignoring their own contradictions. “Those with multiple spouses now claim moral superiority and blame us,” he said, directly criticizing voices from the diaspora.

He defended Nepal’s younger leaders and said they carry the responsibility to build a better nation. “We will shape a more prosperous and beautiful Nepal,” he declared.

Basnet also addressed the visit visa controversy. He questioned the moral credibility of rival parties, taking direct aim at the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RaSWaPa) lead by Rabi Lammichhane and the Akikrit Samajwadi Party lead by Madhav Kumar Nepal

“One of your chairpersons faces charges from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority. Another leader is in jail. Yet you want to teach us about morality?” he said. “Learn yourselves first—then teach others.”
