Ward Chairperson Attacks Two RaSwaPa Leaders with Iron Rod
Sunil Khanal, the Ward Chairperson elected from Congress, assaulted two leaders of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RaSWaPa) with an iron rod, injuring them.
After the Aadhikhola River faced a threat to its existence, leaders campaigning for river conservation were attacked with an iron rod by Sunil Khanal, the Ward Chairperson of Waling-10, elected from Congress, who has now gone into hiding.
On Tuesday, Ward Chairperson Khanal struck two RaSWaPa leaders returning from the Aadhikhola Conservation Campaign program. The injured include Megh Ale, a central member and activist of RaSWaPa, and Dinkar Nepal (also known as Dinesh Tiwari), a member of the Central Leadership Capacity Development Department. The attack occurred in Surkaudi, Waling-9.
According to Nepal, the assault happened suddenly when they were returning on motorcycles after announcing the Andhikhola conservation campaign. Nepal’s hand bones were fractured, and he was taken to Pokhara for further treatment. Ale received treatment at the Waling Primary Health Care Center and has since returned home.
Nepal said, “When we spoke out against river exploitation and demanded legal procedures to protect Aadhikhola , local authorities threatened us. While we were heading towards Gaushala, the chairperson suddenly stopped our motorcycle and hit my head with an iron rod. My helmet’s visor broke, and I injured my hand trying to block the blow.” He added, “This level of hooliganism came from elected representative Sunil Khanal and another person. They attacked us with the intent to kill.”
The conservation campaign was announced after the river’s existence came under threat due to exploitation of stones and gravel. The victims have already filed a complaint with the police.
